DD2 - 4 month update

* Age of your EC-child: 4 months

* We started at... birth

* Generally speaking we are doing... good. It is tougher now that she is more willing/interested in tummy time. I would probably do better if I carried her more, but sometimes I just want to do stuff without wearing her.

* How do you know your baby has to go? Baby's signals? Timing? Intuition? Is there a difference for poos and pees?
LOL – her sister Jane (23 mo) tells me. I am not sure how we figure it out most times. I do ask Jane often because sometimes it is nice to get a second opinion. At night it is the usual wake, fuss, mama’s hopeful denial, miss.

* Which positions/receptacles do you use? We mainly use the BBLP. We also use a variety of standing in sink, in-arms over toilet, potty bowl, toilet w/insert, in-arms outside and over the sink. My latest experiment is the “pee mat”. It started out by just lying Helen on the bath mat in the bathroom on her belly when I would go pee. Needless to say, baby lying on belly while mama pees pretty much guarantees a “catch” if baby has to pee. I am working on incorporating a pee mat into some of our out & about routines now.

* Do you use diapers or training pants? On what occasions, what kind of diapers? We use a mix of SIMPLYcover (size M) & insert, Bright Bots (size S or M), Snap Pants (size S, M or L), KISSes (Size M), B’undies (size M or L), Poquitos (size L) and Prefolds/Prefold Belt – all depending on desired protection and laundry status. It is nice to be using Jane’s old trainers now. I love using the KISSes and Bright Bots on Helen, as the pull-up/down aspect works well. I still haven’t missed a poo yet in either of them, so that may change my mind.

* How are you doing away from home? We do fairly well. I have found that getting wet from a miss isn’t that bad. We have had a couple of poo misses while out, but we have been in SIMPLYcover and insert for those misses (in carseat), and they were quick, easy clean-up. For some of those I did catch part of the poo.

* What are you doing at night? Prefolds with Prefold Belt have been working really well for us. I miss most of the night pees these days (usually 2-5), and we no longer have the long, dry stretches that we were enjoying. Nighttime EC is definitely easier when baby doesn’t pee at night.

* Who takes baby to the potty? Me, DH and our teenage babysitter

* Accidents - how many do you have and what times are especially accident-prone? I still haven’t figured out a way to keep track of how many accidents we are having, and it varies from day to day. Our accident prone times are when I am not wearing her.

* Other new insights:
Pull up/down undies have become more typical wear for us, as they are easier to remove for pottying. It is really difficult to lie her down to take off any backup I may have her wearing, and I assume it is very uncomfortable for her to be on her back with a full bladder (thanks for that Link http://groups.yahoo.com/group/eliminationcommunication/message/34318).

* What do you like most about ecing at the moment? That most poo and so much pee goes in the potty are great.

* Do you ever wish you'd have never heard about it? Not really. Sometimes when I am trying to figure out how to potty her out and about I feel a bit odd. I have had the unexpected poo when I held her out over the ground to pee. I was able to remove that, but that is difficult with newborn poo. I keep telling myself that I should carry newspaper for pottying like that, but that hasn’t happened yet. What do you do for holding out to potty when in public but not at a toilet?
